RELAXED AND NATURAL POSING
“I don’t love having my photo taken, will you tell me what to do?” Of course! While I’m not a super-poser, I will give you some light direction and avoid the awkward poses at all costs. I’ll encourage you to relax, play and snuggle with your children. I’ll set up tickle fights, ask kids to run into your arms, give each other giant bear hugs, or say “boogers!” as loud as they can. When kids (and grown-ups) are truly having fun, we get their genuine smiles and giggles. Don’t worry, I’ll let you know if you’re making goofy faces, have a double chin, or are standing in an awkward way. I’ll make you look good!
LOOK-AT-THE-CAMERA AND CANDID
I adore lifestyle imagery and lots of candid moments, but understand clients want classic look-at-the-camera shots too. We’ll do a mix of both styles, along with a number of backgrounds, so you have a variety of images to choose from in your final gallery. Of course if you like candid more than posed, or vice versa, just let me know and I’ll shoot accordingly.
BEAUTY IN THE CHAOS
After 19 years photographing kids, I swear one of three things happens on photo day: kids get sick, skip their nap, or scratch their face. Please don’t stress! Imperfect is normal (and I can edit out scratches)! If your child starts to fuss, we stop for a snack, snuggle, or go for a little walk. Usually after a “reset” they’re ready to jump back into the shoot. My camera fires 6 frames a second – if children only give me a few good minutes, that’s an entire gallery of good images. Beauty in the chaos.

Schedule whenever you feel best in front of the camera! Anytime between 26 and 36 weeks is recommended. Some women (like yours truly) show early and would rather be photographed sooner than later. Others want to capture the bump as close to delivery as possible. I prefer not to schedule sessions after 36 weeks, as babies do come early and you can miss the chance at the session.
My petite sessions have 5 select locations in the Seattle area. Have a special spot in mind? Book a Classic or Heirloom session and make it all your own.
30-60 minutes depending on package chosen (petite, classic, or heirloom)
mom alone – up close + full length
mom + partner if applicable
siblings and belly if applicable
detail shots of belly
props if requested (2 max please)
Some women love being pregnant and feel it’s their most beautiful time of life. Others get a little self-conscious with their changing bodies. Having grown 2 human beings myself, I know how much an expecting woman appreciates flattering photos. When shooting, I will choose the best angles and direct you to the most appealing poses. The session will be relaxed and fun.
Schedule your session a week or two after your due date. If baby arrives early or late, you’re recovering from surgery, baby needs extra care at the hospital, or it’s just too exhausting to think of a photo shoot that soon, I’m happy to reschedule for a better time. Because my style is candid and natural, I don’t need to photograph newborns in a set period of time when they’re most sleepy and malleable. We shoot when you’re ready! If you’d like to wait until 3 or 4 weeks, that’s fine too.
Sessions normally take place in the client’s home. If you feel your home is too dark, we can use my studio instead.
An hour and a half. More or less depending on how often baby stops for a feeding.
individual portraits of baby
baby with each parent
baby with sibling(s) if applicable
details of baby’s fingers and toes
detail shots of the nursery
nursing photos, upon request
grandparents with baby, upon request
I work through my shot list (above) in no particular order. For baby’s individual photos, I’ll use the crib, bed, or couch, and bring a stack of clean, fluffy blankets to switch out “backgrounds”. If you’d rather use your own blankets, that’s okay too. I have a portable heater to keep baby cozy and comfortable. If you’d like nursing photos, I’m happy to take those – it’s a beautiful bond between mama and child.
As parents, your job is to take care of baby as you would if I wasn’t there. I work around you, not the other way around. My job is to walk you through the shoot, direct you on how to pose, and keep track of the shot list. I want to make it as relaxing an experience as possible.
Grandparents are welcome to be part of the session – it’s beautiful to see the whole family in love with a baby! It can be overwhelming for new parents to have a room full of people during the entire session though. Once the grandparents have had their picture taken, it’s okay to excuse them for a walk or an errand so we can turn the focus back on your new family and baby.
Schedule anytime of the year you like! I prefer to shoot an hour after sunrise, or an hour before sunset for the prettiest light. If these times don’t work for your child’s schedule, email me and we can adjust our start for when they’re happiest. Summer is a great time for warm weather and pretty sunsets. Fall is great if you want a current photo for the holiday card, or like the pretty colors. Summer + Fall are my busiest seasons, so please book early.
Popular milestone baby sessions are 6 months and 1 year. Most babies don’t sit up until 7 months, so you’re welcome to do that time if you prefer a sitting up photo.
On location at a Seattle park of your choice, in your home, or in my SODO studio. See my outdoor location list here. You’re always welcome to shoot at home. Travel fees apply for shoots more than 20 miles outside the 98115 zip code
30 to 90 minutes depending on package chosen (petitie, classic, or heirloom)
family portrait with pet, if applicable
individual of each child
siblings with each parent
lots of candids
Fun! I keep my sessions relaxed, but also pretty fast moving. I find if we take too much time, kids fall apart and adults get worn out. I’ll play games, sing songs, and use a few tricks learned over the years to bring out the most candid smiles and expressions. I usually get all the shots in the first half the shoot, so if kiddos melt halfway through, we got what we need. The second half the shoot is for variety and more candids.
Clothing choice is ultimately up to your personal style, though I recommend choosing 3 colors, and dressing within that palette. Coordinated but not matching is the goal. Trendy styles will date your photos quickly, but classic looks make for timeless images. Outfit changes are fine for all shoots except minis – they go too fast! See my Pinterest album for style ideas.
For sessions with kids, please bring snacks, blankets, or lovies that will make them feel at ease. A treat for the end of the session is a great incentive! For outdoor sessions, please bring a blanket to sit on. It’s nice to have a heavy one underneath and a pretty one on top when the ground is damp.
I don’t consider myself a prop photographer, but will accommodate 1 or 2 if you have a particular announcement or Pinterest photo you’d like to create. Some examples are sonogram photos or baby shoes at maternity sessions, teddy bears for milestone shoots, and signs for engagement or family photos.
Are welcome! Just bring a treat for dogs so I can get their attention, and a leash so we can tie them up for non-pet poses. I love animals, and once had a hedgehog come to a shoot!
A week before your shoot you will receive an email confirmation of your appointment time. If you haven’t chosen a location yet, we can confirm this over email (as well as a meeting spot). You are welcome to email any last questions too.
Wet weather is common in the Northwest. If it’s looking like rain, I usually like to wait until the night before or morning of your session to make the call, as sometimes the sun comes out just in time. The next best strategy is to choose a different start time on the same day, when the hourly forecast shows dry weather. If it’s truly a rainy day, you can have your session at UW Campus. Reschedules are based on remaining availability on the calendar.
Edits included color and exposure correction, sharpening, noise reduction, tone curve adjustment, a light airbrush, and an artistic edit. I want your photos to look top notch, but also natural, clean, and classic. Custom airbrushing (i.e. removing black eyes, bruises, or teeth whitening) is not standard, but can be added for a fee.
All the good images from your session will be edited and delivered in a gallery 2-3 weeks after your session (Summer and Fall are my busy seasons). In the meantime, I can post a teaser to Facebook or Instagram with your permission.
Classic Sessions include all the images for download. For Petite and Mini sessions, after you have determined your favorites, you will mark your final images in your gallery. Email me when you’re done and I will send a download link. Can’t narrow down? You can purchase the full set of images if you like.
You can order prints, canvases, phone cases, and other products directly from your gallery. I’ve set my pricing to be affordable because I believe your professional photo experience should be completed with professional quality prints.
If your package includes mini books and prints, you’ll select your 10 favorite images in your gallery when finished. I’ll use these for your design, and 10 5×7 prints. My professional lab fulfills and ships direct to you.
Photos are meant to be enjoyed and shared! Friends and family can view your gallery and order their own products. Post to social media if you like, just please skip the filters to preserve the edit please.
